From Scaffold to Sm'ashleys
Meet Ash Gutsell, a former scaffolder from Seaham Harbour who turned his passion for burgers into a local food success story.
After over ten years in construction, Ash perfected his smash-burger technique at home, creating those signature thin, juicy crusted patties that friends and family couldn't get enough of.
In 2022, he launched Sm'ash Burger as a pop-up at Slice Seaham, selling nearly 2,000 burgers in just five weeks! The instant success led to regular weekday sessions that drew enthusiastic locals.
By late 2023, Ash partnered with Lee Wilkinson and Liam Patterson to open our dedicated takeaway and restaurant space on Church Street. The concept expanded beyond burgers, adding loaded fries, wraps, and pizza while building a loyal local following.
Community comes first: To celebrate six months in our new premises, we offered 200 free meals as a gesture of thanks to the community and to support Andy's Man Club, a local mental health charity - showing our commitment to giving back to Seaham.
When trademark issues arose with "Smash Burger," we respectfully rebranded to Sm'ashleys - keeping the connection to Ash's name while steering clear of legal conflicts and continuing our food innovation journey.
As the Sunderland Echo said: "A former scaffolder has turned his hand to constructing burgers – and he's proved a smash hit."
Today, we're proud to serve Seaham with the same community spirit that started it all. Located at 72 Church Street, we offer delivery, collection, and dine-in options.
